There’s a style of black Barossan shiraz best described as hedonistic; this is a lush example. Dark, intensely flavoured, oozing blackberries, raspberries and aniseed, and eminently more-ish. It has a chocolatey, caramel-like aftertaste that lingers all the way to your next gulp. A wine to be consumed with the proverbial brontosaurus steak.

Attractive wine from a challenging vintage, black cherry and plum fruit with perfectly integrated and balanced oak; overall extract tightly controlled.

2007 Epsilon Barossa Valley shiraz, which has a rich purple colour with inviting pink hues around the edge, giving way to rich and powerful fruit driven nose. Black cherry fruit, spice, and nicely integrated oak are evident. The palate is soft and silky with plenty of varietal blackberry fruit while the tannins are subtle with a rounded mouth feel. The fruit is ripe and judicious with good palate length, making it a superb Shiraz one which Epsilon do exceptionally well.

It is rare that a wine's quality does not reflect its price. However, there are exceptions. The wines of the week are reserved fro those wines that show both exceptional quality and outstanding value.
HARMONY IN A GLASS
SHIRAZ 2007, Epsilon, Barossa Valley, Australia red, SAQ # 108174479. The 2006 was a wine of the week, and I think I like the 2007 even more. Wonderfully ripe, yet without the excessive oak or jammy fruit so often associated with Barossa shiraz. Harmony in a glass, with blackcurrents, peppercorn and just a touch of oak. Long, expansive and silky textrue with a spicy tannic finish. Might not please those of you who want the massive fruit bomb, but for everyone else, this is an easydrinking and very refined Australian shiraz. Drink now. Food Pairing: Braised lamb with garden herbs.
